Researchers have discovered a new species of insect, known as a thrips, inside the bright flowers of a tropical plant. Uncovered during an exploratory survey in the biodiversity-rich Western Ghats of Karnataka, the new species, officially named Trachynotothrips vyaghravahini, was identified by researchers examining local plant life. The discovery was made by the Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences and the National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources. While exploring Pilikula Nisargadhama, a nature reserve in Dakshina Kannada, the team collected the minute bugs from the blossoms of a Lagerstroemia tree.

To name their microscopic discovery, the scientists looked to the region's rich local history. They chose the name vyaghravahini, which is derived from the ancient Sanskrit words 'vyaghra' (meaning tiger) and 'vahini' (meaning flowing river). This name is a direct nod to the specific location where the insect was found, Pilikula, which historically was known as a river where wild tigers frequently came to drink water.

Because thrips are typically only a millimetre or two in length, the team preserved the collected specimens, mounted them on glass slides, and examined them under high-powered microscopes. Through this detailed observation, they noticed that the new insect possessed unique physical traits that clearly separated it from its closest known relatives in the Trachynotothrips insect family. Unlike similar species, the newly discovered Trachynotothrips vyaghravahini has a uniformly pale midsection without any brown stripes and entirely pale hind legs. Furthermore, it lacks the distinct spine-like hairs on the sides of its abdomen and features a different arrangement of microscopic bristles on its lower body compared to its insect cousins.

This find highlights the incredible, yet often overlooked, biodiversity of the Western Ghats, which is recognised globally as one of the world's eight hottest hotspots for unique wildlife. While most people might not notice these minuscule bugs, discovering new species like the 'tiger river' Thrips helps scientists better understand the complex biological relationships between insects and plants in fragile ecosystems. Alongside this brand-new species, the research team also documented the first-ever Indian sighting of a different thrips species originally known only from Japan and China, proving that the dense forests of the Western Ghats still hold many natural mysteries waiting to be solved.
